Cairns Turf – Golf Turf & Sports Fields – Specialised Varieties

Tropical Lawns specializes in turf for sporting fields and has developed and holds plant variety ownership of two fine leaf grasses grown widely on resort golf course greens in tropical south-east Asia. Whatever your sporting field or golfing green needs, Tropical Turf has the grass for you.

Sports Fields

Tropical Lawns provides a range of turf types suited to many different sporting applications. The Tropical Lawns range of turf solutions cater to a variety of situations where soil is undesirable, as it may affect ball bounce (turf wicket) or drainage (golf green).

Generally, sports fields are large open spaces that need hard wearing turf that can be mowed down to heights varying from 3mm to 50mm. Two varieties that Tropical Lawns recommends for general use for football codes, cricket ovals, school grounds and golf fairways in tropical environments are:

  • Oztuff (PBR) a Queensland bred grass that is low growing, hard wearing and most importantly, requires less fertilizer than the rest. Few sports fields stay weed free without lots of fertilizer, OZTUFF is the better choice. For more information, please visit:
  • Greenlees Park is an older, tried and true variety in the tropics. Note: it is higher maintenance than Oztuff.

Golf & Bowls

  • Novotek (PBR) is a locally developed ecotype, with superior performance. It has similar qualities to Tifgreen and Tifdwarf, however, unlike these two varieties, it is not affected by the ‘summer decline’ during the monsoon season in tropical conditions. Novotek has proven resistant to disease in the monsoon season and tolerates low air flow situations very well. It is being used on many local golf courses and is also performing extremely well on resort courses across south-east Asia.
  • Mountain Green (PBR) is another locally developed grass which is slightly coarser than Novotek and very attractive. It is currently in use on golf greens across the ‘wet belt’ from Babinda to Tully in Tropical North Queensland and is excellent for tees, as it has very deep rhizomes.

As well as turf supply, Tropical Lawns offers many professional turf services to the golf and sports industries, please contact us for more information on phone (07) 4056 1740 email or visit the services section of our website.
