Established in 1989 to meet demands of the then boom town of Cairns, marketing was initially directed to home lawns and amenity landscaping. A more holistic approach over time has allowed Tropical Lawns to branch into the sportsfield and erosion control markets. Ongoing research has identified specialised varieties most suited to the tropics, some of these are locally adapted varieties, while others have originated in other tropical countries or subtropical Australia.
Turf varieties are now grown on 40 hectares of rich alluvial soils of the Mulgrave and Little Mulgrave rivers, 30 minutes south of Cairns, QLD.

ENVIRONMENTAL STANCE

Our policy is one of ongoing improvement to ensure all aspects of the environment are uncomprimised by turf farm operations. We are one of the few turf companies in the world who replace topsoil removed each harvest, using a by-product of the sugar factories called mill mud shich is very nutrient rich. Other measures used include the use of slow release fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides which have a very short life in the environment, and restricting usage to the months where high rainfall is unlikely. We collect and reuse runoff water from the farm, our active selection program identifies varieties that have lower fertiliser and mowing requirements, as well as those which have natural insect and disease resistance, meaning less pesticide usage.
