Turf Varieties
Buffalo/Broadleaf carpet grass is a type of grass that is particularly well-suited for tropical lawns. It is easy to mow and maintain and is very tolerant of heavy rains and high humidity. It is also perfect for wet tropic climates.
Our Nara Native Zoysia range is a hearty grass and boasts with impressive drought and salt tolerance. Plus, its natural weed resistance is highly convenient for busy home and business owners. It is native to Queensland and grows naturally along the beaches.
Our Shadetuff/Matrella variety is native to the northern beaches. It is a very dark lushed green with fine leaves. It is soft and great for small children to play on. Matrella is suitable to most soil types and shade tolerant. It is a great option for embankments.
Z-11 is a hybrid zoysia with a distinctive bright lime green colour that makes it stand out from other lawn varieties. Easy to care for and hard-wearing, it's a great choice for busy families who want a beautiful lawn without the upkeep.
Sir Walter is a soft leaf buffalo and one of Australia's most popular lawn varieties for good reason. Low maintenance and highly drought resistant, it's a reliable choice for homeowners who want a lush, easy-care lawn that holds up through dry spells.
Tropica Blue Couch is a very environmentally sustainable grass. Best turf on sandy soils and full sun positions. It is suitable for home lawns but also for sports fields and other bigger projects.
No Mow, or Zoysia tenuifolia, is an ornamental grass perfect for feature gardens and garden beds. Its very fine leaf and distinctive lumpy, mounding texture make it a striking visual choice for homeowners looking to add something a little different to their landscape.
Greenlees Park Couch is a hard-wearing, semi-dwarf couch grass popular across Australia for its fine texture and deep bottle-green color. It is heavily used for commercial sports fields like bowling greens due to its ability to be mown low and recover quickly.
Keeping your Zoysia looking its best comes down to knowing the basics. From mowing heights and watering schedules to nutrient management, our Zoysia maintenance guide covers everything you need to keep your lawn lush, healthy and thriving year-round.
Our Variety of Turfs
At Tropical Lawns, we know that not all turf varieties are created equal. That’s why we grow eight different types of turf grasses, all of which have been meticulously selected to suit various applications. From homes to commercial operations, we have the suitable turf for the job. And because we’re based in Cairns, we know a thing or two about tropical turf! All of our turf varieties have been extensively tested in our climate to ensure they’re up to the task.
Any of these varieties have been developed for specific uses, and some are protected by plant variety rights to preserve their integrity, that is, to be certain that they are grown by professionals who will maintain the purity of strain and present them to clients in a weed- and pest-free state.
Thoroughly Tested Turf Varieties
At Tropical Lawns, we only ever use the best turf varieties that have been extensively tested in our tropical climate. This ensures they are ideally suited to the job at hand and thrive in the Cairns region. Additionally, our methods of keeping turf fresh and reducing composting in the pallets have been perfected to give our products the best chance of survival.
For example, we know that turf harvested at high temperatures — above 25ºC — will start to compost quickly. To combat this, we reduce the time from harvest to delivery and laying to the absolute minimum. In some cases, turf needs to be road or barge transported for three days to remote areas. For these situations, we have developed special packing requirements that minimise risk and ensure the turf arrives fresh and healthy.
When you choose Tropical Lawns, you can be confident you’re getting the best turf on the market.
Laying Advice & Our Quoting Services
Whether you’re looking to install a new turf or renovate an existing lawn, site preparation is the most important factor in achieving a successful result. At Tropical Lawns, we offer free site visits to assess your individual needs and provide you with laying advice, a free quote and installation if required.
The area for turfing must have good surface drainage and internal drainage; there are many aspects of achieving a good result; it comes down to the individual location, soil type and profile, organic matter, shade etc. and the owner’s expectations.
We offer free site visits to inspect and discuss the above, advice and free measures and quotes to supply turf and install it if required. T&C applies.
Turf Laying Process
Laying on a prepared surface involves supplying and spreading a complete fertiliser, laying turf to suit the lay of the land to reduce erosion, rolling to press out any air pockets and watering as each pallet is laid so that it doesn’t dry out. Tropical Lawns offers this as a professional service.
Our commitment to your lawn is ongoing; any time you need help with any aspect of maintaining a healthy, attractive, functional lawn, Tropical Lawns is only a phone call or email away.
